carry you to jesus

Today, a dear friend sent a small package in the mail - a little booklet with short devotions for each day of the year - along with a beautiful, thoughtfully written card. She sent it as a reminder to us that we are in her prayers for healing and comfort. As today was the one month anniversary of Jimmy's journey to heaven, her loving touch was just what I needed. And it made me think.

What can I do to help comfort those around me? It doesn't have to be something big. In fact, the greatest means of comfort are the small things. Hugs. "I love you."  Prayers. Just being there. The people who most understand that the pain won't just go away over time are the ones who can comfort the most. That's another lesson I've been learning. Learning the hard way.

The card from my friend included this quote: "Time is not a healer. Time is only a revealer of how God does the healing." ~Ravi Z. The little phrase really calmed me, helped me once again realize that God is working in me, He's not leaving me to myself. He's not waiting for me to turn back to Him. He's holding my heart now.

The words of the Steven Curtis Chapman song "Carry You to Jesus" have been in my head since just after the accident. These words have helped guide me in how to comfort others.

"I will not pretend to feel the pain you’re going through
I know I cannot comprehend the hurt you’ve known
And I used to think it mattered if I understood
But now I just don’t know

Well, I’ll admit sometimes I still wish I knew what to say
And I keep looking for a way to fix it all
But we know we’re at the mercy of God’s higher ways
And our ways are so small

But I will carry you to Jesus
He is everything you need
I will carry you to Jesus on my knees

It’s such a privilege for me to give this gift to you
All I’d ever hope you’d give me in return
Is to know that you’ll be there to do the same for me
When the tables turn

And if you need to cry go on and I, I will cry along with you, yeah
I’ve given you what I have but still I know the best thing I can do
Is just pray for you..."

Sometimes, it doesn't feel like Jesus is all you need. In the midst of incomprehensible pain, it's hard to understand His sufficiency. And there's nothing that those of us around can truly do except just pray for you.

Look around you and see those in need of comfort. Be there for them. But remember that you can't heal them.

Just carry them to Jesus.

  1. Thanks for that Shelby.
Sometimes it's hard to remember that God is working when we don't feel Him. It's also good to remember that you won't be able to help someone or be there for them unless you take the time to get close enough to know when they're hurting. Thanks Darlin' for the reminder. Love you.
