groanings
The times, they come,
And come and come,
When death seems ever near.
Sometimes those days,
Are filled with praise,
And God’s truth seems so clear.
But times, they come,
When one more time,
You’re hit with sin’s last blow.
You try to pray,
But in dismay,
The words refuse to flow.
As times, they come,
When words fall short,
And tears fill in their place,
The Spirit leads,
And intercedes,
Our sufferings not erased.
These times, they come,
And come and come,
The Spirit’s groanings heard.
Our hearts firm ground,
In this, the sound,
The groans too deep for words.
~based on romans 8:26
“Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
This poem came to me earlier this week, on a day where once again, death became a theme. In so many cases, death is a beautiful thing, where a soul is finally going Home. But sometimes, it's just hard to be strong in that truth. Sometimes, I just want to cry when I hear of one more. I just don't know what to pray, and all my words seem too shallow.
There was a moment like that this week, and I remembered this verse I had just read and pondered. The verse that describes how the Spirit, the very Spirit of the Almighty and Holy God, helps us in our weakness. That even when our words fail us, He intercedes, He prays for us. He prays for us with groanings. Groanings too deep for words.
Praise God. Praise God.
