advent - hope
What is Advent?
Advent is the holy season that precedes Christmas. From the Latin adventus,
meaning “arrival,” it is a time of hope and expectancy, when Christians
prepare their hearts for the coming of Christ. Each of the four weeks of advent
encompass a theme; this week’s theme is Hope, Salvation, Prophecy, and
Judgment. Use these prayers and Scriptures to prepare your heart for the
celebration of Christ’s birth.
Advent Collect (Book of Common Prayer)
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Select Prayer (Revised Common Lectionary)
Unexpected God, your advent alarms us. Wake us from drowsy worship, from the sleep that neglects love, and the sedative of misdirected frenzy. Awaken us now to your coming, and bend our angers into your peace. Amen.
