it’s you i like

I love the days I get to spend with my two favorite little boys. As I prepared to start nannying them in September, I thought about the opportunity I had to teach them some of the most important things about their worth and how loved they are just for being themselves. And of course it made me think of Mr. Rogers, took me back to the couch of my childhood, and brought back the words of the songs he sang so directly into children’s souls.

Starting off I felt a little funny singing this song, felt like they would think it was a little cheesy, but what was I thinking! They loved it. Wouldn’t we all love to be told over and over that we are liked for being just ourselves? Today I got to sit on the couch with Remi as he asked to sing it over and over, slowly learning all the words, smiling the whole way through, and each repetition scooting himself a little closer until our faces were just centimeters apart as we sang. It is magical! So here is a precious, precious song for you to sing to the little ones in your life, but also to the little one in your own soul. And some photos of the sweetest boys. And a video that brings me to tears almost every time. Thank you, Mr. Rogers!

It's you I like,
It's not the things you wear,
It's not the way you do your hair
But it's you I like
The way you are right now,
The way down deep inside you
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys
They're just beside you.
But it's you I like
Every part of you.
Your skin, your eyes, your feelings
Whether old or new.
I hope that you'll remember
Even when you're feeling blue
That it's you I like,
It's you yourself
It's you.
It's you I like.
