she spoke to our mothers
I’ve started a podcast series with Nate Hanson on the podcast Almost Heretical called “Woman: Reframing God and the Bible.” In the opening episode, we discuss the significance of how we perceive the gender of God. We read the passage below - originally with a male pronoun - in order to help listeners consider that the fullness of God cannot be expressed unless it includes both male and female. Listen to the episode here!
“My soul magnifies the Creator,
and my spirit rejoices in my Savior,
For she has looked on the humble estate of her servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for she who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is her name.
And her mercy is for those who fear her
from generation to generation.
She has shown strength with her arm;
she has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
she has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
she has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich she has sent away empty.
She has helped her servant Israel,
in remembrance of her mercy,
as she spoke to our mothers,
to Sarah and to her offspring forever.”
